Strouse House continues....

Sorry took a break after my last blog post. It has been hard to catch my breath around here much less write a blog.

Here at the Strouse House we are continuing to deal with the issues that where posted in the previous blog.

The littles are doing good with their routine changes. :^)

We decided to start our new school year officially after Labor day! That gives me some more time to get Honey's curriculum figured out. Other then the time4learning.come preschool lessons and educational video's

Biggun we have almost set, but I still need to buy his math PACE's and his Language Arts Paces and books that go w/ them.  Other then that I am set with him too.

Oh then there is that nasty thing called a schedule. Yes something I am not very good at. I can make a schedule with the best of them but to follow on is not always easy for me.  (blushing)

I will end this blog on a great note. My son earned LOTS of merit badges and moved up a rank. Oh if I say the wrong rank he would be mad at me. I will ask and come back and let ya'll know.

OH and I can't forget to through in an update on our chickens. We have lots of eggs!

Chicken Adventures - Meet the Spice Chics!

Our girls are growing very fast. They where born on March 7th. 

This was the day we got them.

Rosemary 

She is Lil Momma's Chic

They are all sound asleep. It is funny how they will stretch their necks.

You may wonder how I can tell Rosemary and Cayenne apart since they are both Rhode Island Red's, well Rosemary has more RED on her beak then Cayenne. She is also bigger then Cayenne.

Chicken Adventures - Chicken Coop Remodeling

This past weekend we worked on remodeling the chicken coop we got real cheap! We chose to remodel it  because the bottom needed replaced and we wanted to lift it off the ground to make it easier to clean underneath. But to do that we had to trip off the top so that it would not be higher then the fence.

Here is the beginning of our remodel.  We will be working on it some more this weekend so I figured I would share what we have done so far.

Fixing the bottom. Taking out the old broke wire and fixing the ladder step thing. I know I should know the names of these things but it is a chicken coop. It is what the chickens use to go up into the roost.

 Here is the semi finished product. There is great ventilation under the roof along with now it is easy to clean underneath it. The only thing left we need to do is work on a run.

Chicken Adventures - Supplies

Just a small update on how it is going. According to my plan it is going right on schedule. 

My daddy came through with lots of supplies for our Chicken Coop. It did not cost us anything. We might look into seeing if this whole thing can count toward some kind scout merit badge.

Chicken Adventures - Education

You read the title right. Chicken Adventures! I am starting a series here of our adventures in getting chickens.

I am starting my homework on what is needed to get a few chickens.  I am excited at the idea of getting some chickens. But scared that I will kill them all before they ever get to be old enough to lay eggs. It is a great homeschool curriculum addition too. Not that it would help much with any homeschool standardize testing we might do but it will be educational.  I am trying to read everything I can and ask as many questions as I can.  I am very blessed to have a good friend, Ms. Betty, close by who has answered all of my questions as they have come up she also has a GREAT blog, Little Farm in the Big City.

I recommend you stop by her blog, she talkes about everything from gardening, canning, sewing, and farming.  All while she lives in the city and not on acres of land. 

I have purchased two books 

 and 

Both books are chalk full of great information and both where recommended by Ms. Betty @ Little Farm in the Big City.  

I think I have decided to go with a Rhode Island Red chicken. They are good layers and are not spooked as easily as other chickens. 

I need to order a few chics this from our local feed supply place, soon.

Next we will be talking about chics and brooding.
