Christmas Decorating

Our family has grown. No we have not had a baby. Biggun's friend, Super D, has become the 4th child we never had. Super D, is 14 like Biggun so he fits right in.  He helped us put up our Christmas tree.

I went to put up our Christmas stockings and he seemed sad he did not have one. When asked what he would want on his stocking if he where to have one, he kept saying he wanted a chicken on it.  I do not know why he wanted a chicken, but he did. All the other stockings have a biblical story behind them and I have hand made them. When I pointed that out to him, he responded Jesus was born in a stable, so who knows if there was a chicken or not.

I surprised Super D with a stocking that I created for him. It even has a chicken on it.

What does your family do for Christmas traditions? Do you have a tree, stockings, special displays?  Do you do any special games for Christmas? Have you tried any US state games? How do you include christian homeschool activities?

Would love to hear from you.

Holiday fun

It is that time of year, when we slow down from our regular schooling schedule and add in some fun activities instead. From crafts to holiday a word search.  We added a some copy work from this cute little free kit.

We have had spelling printable that are Christmas and winter themed.

Books we are enjoying with our Christmas reading time.

We are having lot of fun making Christmas crafts, too.

Crystal Ornaments

I came across this great blog about how to grow sparkling crystals on ornaments over at Homemade Mamas

Here are the pictures from our fun adventure...

FIRST we twisted and bent the pipe cleaners while the water heated up.

Then we lined up the glasses, added some borax, and then poured water.

After a few hours we started to see the crystals forming. Here is what they looked like the next day.

It looks like those are bubbles in the glasses in the pictures but that is really the crystals.  You could tell which one we added TOO much borax to, can you figure out which one it is? You guessed it the one w/ the pink squiggle in it.  That one was almost solid gel when we pulled the pipe cleaner out.  I love how the blue pipecleaner turned the water blue.

Next we pulled them out and hung them to dry. I don't know if you were supposed to hang them to dry but we did.

Here is a pic of the flower was made on the tree.  The others I could not get to show up nice on my small camera.

The only problem is the borax crystals are on the glasses and I don't know how to get them out of the glasses.so if you do this use plastic throwaway cups.

Holiday's and School

After the Holiday's getting back into the swing of things is soooo hard.  We normally take from Thanksgiving to New Years off and do Christmas school that is everything we do is focused on Christmas.  We have done lapbooks, unit studies, read alouds and just plain fun Christmas stuff in the past. We had not planned on taking any time off except Thur and Fri. But Biggun sorta messed that up for himself this year. By not completing some assignments on time so he is behind on a few things and needs to catch up.  We might get some Christmas schooling in before Christmas but not sure when.

So instead of Christmas school Biggun just started a new section on his science program. He is learning about atoms. I can't wait to see where this is going.  He really enjoyed the first two days worth lessons. I see some science experiments in our future.

Biggun is having fun w/ fractions adding/subtracting/multiplying and dividing, that will come in handy with cooking. He can practice w/ some online math games and with helping me make cookies and pies for Christmas.

If we get around to doing Christmas school I will share what we choose to do. Do any of you Christmas school? If so what do you do? Please share....
