Eggspactular Science Activity

We did this great homeschool science activity at the beginning of the summer and life has been so busy that I am just now getting around to showing ya'll.

We decided to take an EGG and place it in vinegar and watch how it changed.

Here is our fresh from the fridge egg.

This was minutes after we placed it into the vinegar.

Over time we saw foam.

After a few days we ended up with an EGG WITH NO SHELL

Some people call it a naked egg. We where able to squeeze it to a point.

When it broke we ended up being a very soft slimy

Here is the vinegar egg and a regular egg side by side.

It was a very neat experiment for the kids they really enjoyed it.

Warm Colors on the Walls.

We finally took the plunge and painted out living room.  We went against the grain for us and painted warm colors. The largest wall of the living room is Wrought Iron Blue, the door wall the double sliding glass door is on is Molasses Brown, the rest of the walls are Tobacco Leaf. Strange names for paint.

Here is the wrought iron blue wall. I am in love with the color. It is so warm.

You can't see much of the molasses brown wall but it is there along with the tobacco leaf color.

We also got curtains for our sliding glass doors. Solid dark blue that look great. I love that they are solar  curtains. They block out the sun from coming in, which is bad during sunset.  They are not thick and heavy either, instead they are very light weight.

In the living room I got new curtains, too.

They match wonderfully.  I have never been one to decorate and it look good. This is my favorite decorating job yet. I just want to sit and enjoy my living room/dining room.  It is very relaxing.  Over the next few weeks we will be working on a floor treatment.  We are going to practice on our floor then do my mom's floor over the summer break.  I can't wait to share with you when we do it.

On a side note, I had someone who has a child with math anxiety send me a request for info on what we use for  algebra curriculum.  We have used 3 kinds over the past year and a half. We have used Time4Learning.com algebra, Life of Fred Pre-Algebra and we are using Keys to Algebra right now. I like that if he gets stuck on a concept he can can go to Time4Learning.com and watch it being explained until he gets it.

What about...

When people find out that we are homeschooling high school, they ask what about socialization. Things like homecoming dances, prom, spirit days, other activities with high school students.

My answer to that is, dances and activities are not in the homeschooling requirements.

BUT….

We have access to all of that and then some.

We belong to the Pinellas Parent Educators Association which is our local homeschool group.  They put together all kinds of great activities.  From "Spirit Day" (outdoor games fun), homecoming and even prom.

In fact Biggun went to homecoming Friday night.

How silly can that boy be?

Still Schooling?

  1. Are you still doing school?
  2. Are you doing Christmas school?
  3. When do you plan on starting back up if you stopped schooling for the holiday's?
  4. Are you changing anything when you start back up?

I have had these questions asked to me by lots of people, both those who are homeschooling and not homeschooling.

So lets see if I can answer them.

  1. Sorta still doing school.  We have gone into holiday mode and slowed down.
  2. Sorta, we did not choose a set theme like symbols of Christmas or name of Jesus like we have in the past but we have done some Christmas things that are educational.
  3. We plan on going back full swing the most likely Jan 7th.
  4. Looking at different Math programs for my oldest.
I can't wait for Honey to get one of her Christmas presents it will help her with reading comprehension. I know she is not reading yet, but she needs to work on her comprehension of what is being read to her.

What are you doing? Share your answers on your own blog and link back to my comment section. I will check out your answers too.

Helping out a friend.....

I have a friend who wants to learn how to write a blog. Char is the sweetest friend. She has even started a blog The Slaughter House Mom , yes that is a play on her last name Slaughter, but has not gotten very far with it.

Between being busy with her own kids (both in highschool band),working part time, and helping support her husband in school for his bachelors in Nursing. She has not had much time to really devote to her blog. I recommended to her to take a blog writing course. To help her along.

I am also trying to get my son to take the same course. So that he can use it for his writing curriculum.  Do it as his daily journal writing. I have mentioned that before but I am still working on convincing him.
